In Lang Se town, Sawlaw Township, Kachin State, a woman was beaten by a battalion commander, and women as well as local residents staged a protest calling for the removal of Battalion Commander Major Lahpai Ja Li Awng.
The incident occurred yesterday, August 29, in the afternoon at a restaurant in Lang Se town, when an argument broke out between a woman and the battalion commander, leading to the assault.
The victim was identified as 34 year old Ma Alu Mi, originally from Mogaung and currently living and working in the Lang Se area. The perpetrator was Battalion Commander Major Lahpai Ja Li Awng from Battalion (51), along with two other soldiers who were involved.
As a result of the assault, Ma Alu Mi sustained injuries to her face, hands, and legs, and required six stitches. Following this, women in Lang Se staged a protest demanding her release, after which she was released, according to reports.
It is reported that the woman was accused of stealing gold from the workplace, which allegedly led to the assault. However, women in Lang Se are demanding accountability from responsible authorities for the truth and proper resolution of the case..
The Lang Se region was taken over by the KIA joint forces last year and has since been under new administrative operations. It is also widely known as a region with extensive gold mining activities.
