Fighting was intense this morning in Waimaw area, Kachin State, with the military council (SAC) using airstrikes and heavy weapons, according to local residents.
The clashes occur daily because SAC troops launched an offensive on August 27 against Lamyang village, which is under the control of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA). Although there is no active ground combat in the nearby Nam Wa and Muk Chyik villages, airstrikes have been conducted, resulting in civilian casualties.
As of the time of writing, around 4:00 PM, the loud sounds of heavy weapons were heard at least twice from the direction of Myitkyina city.
Furthermore, intense fighting is also ongoing in Hpakant Township. The KIA's allied forces have warned local residents to be extremely cautious of the dangers from airstrikes and heavy artillery shelling.
Due to these threats, some schools within the area have been forced to close on an emergency basis and remain shut.
The Kachin Human Rights Watch (KHRW) has also issued a statement alleging that the military council is increasingly using heavy weapons, indiscriminately targeting and shelling civilian areas.
