Despite the country grappling with the aftermath of a major earthquake, Myanmar’s military junta carried out a total of 64 air and artillery attacks between March 28 and April 4, according to a statement released by the National Unity Government (NUG).

The NUG reported that the junta conducted 48 airstrikes across 11 regions, with Sagaing Region suffering the most, hit 11 times, followed by Kachin State, which was targeted 5 times. The actual number of attacks may be higher, as ground conditions suggest further undocumented assaults.

The airstrikes resulted in 61 civilian deaths and 49 injuries, with Kachin State recording the highest number of fatalities—38 dead and 29 injured, making it the worst-hit area during the week.

In addition to air attacks, the junta also launched 15 artillery strikes, killing 7 people and injuring 17 others, the NUG reported.

This escalation came despite an official ceasefire announcement by the junta, which claimed a nationwide suspension of offensive operations from April 2 to April 22 in response to the earthquake emergency. However, daily air raids reportedly continued, and military ground operations have also been observed in some parts of Kachin State.
