It has now been 11 years since two volunteer teachers sent by the Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC) were raped and murdered, yet no proper justice has been achieved to this day, according to available information.
The two teachers, Ms. Maran Lu Ra and Ms. Tangbau Hkawn Nan Tsin, were raped and murdered at around 1:00 a.m. on 19 January 2015 in Kawng Hka Village, northern Shan State, allegedly by soldiers from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 503, based in Kyaukme.
Although 11 years have passed since the two teachers were brutally abused and killed, justice has still not been delivered. Up to the present day, justice remains absent and the truth continues to be concealed.
A spokesperson from Kachin Human Right Watch (KHRW), Ko Jacob, stated:
“KHRW will continue to stand for ending impunity.” The two victims, 20 year old Ms. Maran Lu Ra and 21 year old Ms. Tangbau Hkawn Nan Tsin, suffered grave human rights violations, and relevant responsible parties are still continuing efforts to uncover the truth and achieve justice.
In previous years, memorial prayer services commemorating the two teachers were organized annually by the KBC Headquarters, with the participation of many members of the public.
However, since 2023, such commemorative events have no longer been held due to ongoing military and political conditions.
