It has been reported that the long closed border gates between Kachin State and China namely Laiza, Mai Ja Yang, and Loi Je have been reopened.
According to reports, the reopening followed discussions between the Chinese government and the KIO (Kachin Independence Organization) administration around October 25. However, it is not yet known what agreements led to the reopening of the border gates.
“Apart from people, the gates that have been reopened are the Laiza, Mai Ja Yang, and Loi Je gates. Only food supplies and consumer goods are currently allowed to pass through, not people. They are importing goods from the Chinese side, while bananas from this side are being exported. But we don’t know exactly how the arrangements were made,” said a local resident.
Although the gates have reopened, only food items and consumer goods are permitted to cross. Machinery and electronic items are still prohibited, sources said.
As some goods have been allowed to pass through, locals are hoping that market prices will start to drop again.
The China–Kachin border gates were originally closed in October and November 2024, after resistance forces launched attacks and seized control of the Pangwa, Chihpwi, and Kanpaiti areas.
