At the Shan Ni Militia checkpoint set up inside Kyargyikwin village, near Hopin town, security checks on motorcycles and cars have reportedly become stricter, and people of Kachin ethnicity are being checked more thoroughly than others, according to transport drivers.
One driver said, “I’m Bamar. After showering, I wore a Kachin longyi and drove off. When I reached the Kyar Gyi Kwin gate, they made a fuss just because I was wearing a Kachin longyi. Later, I was told that because my friend (a Kachin) had a ‘Manaw’ sticker on the car’s windshield, they made him remove it at the checkpoint and threatened to break the window if he didn’t. I also heard that any Kachin textiles being transported from Myitkyina southwards, if found at this checkpoint, would be destroyed,” he said.
Sources reveal that Shan Ni Militia are especially targeting and strictly checking Kachin people, restricting freedom of movement by various means.
Kyar Gyi Kwin village is located along the Union Highway adjacent to Hopin, and the Shan Ni militia gate is an established stronghold checkpoint on the same road.
Similarly, after the capture of villages like Inndaw Gyi, Nant Mun, Main Naung, and Mamon Kai by the military and SNA (Shan Ni Army), Kachin people suffered ethnic threats and fled while those remaining faced various forms of intimidation and harassment from Shan Ni people.
After the military and SNA took control of Main Naung and Mamon Kai checkpoints along the Inndaw Gyi–Hpakant route have been tightened, with increased arrests and beatings targeting Kachin people attempting to travel the route.
