Due to ongoing phone and internet blackouts in Kachin State, residents report increasing difficulties accessing the internet as more Starlink satellite accounts are being locked one after another.

“Around June, Starlink accounts started getting locked one after another. I think it will continue. I heard Starlink is not officially allowed in Myanmar. Now that Starlink is locking accounts, I think our communications and work in Kachin State will go back to how it was before. Some internet cafes have already started closing,” said a woman from Myitkyina.

A local internet service provider explained that, since Myanmar is not an officially supported country for Starlink, using the service violates Starlink’s Terms of Service and Roaming Policy, which is why accounts are being locked.

He also warned that submitting Starlink support tickets should be avoided, as using Starlink from Myanmar is a direct violation of their policies and there is a very high risk of accounts being locked.

“Even though the phone lines are unstable, when Starlink internet was available, we could work and communicate. Now, with Starlink getting locked and not being able to recover accounts, we’re worried we’ll go back to a news blackout like before,” the woman added.

Since July 21 last year, all phone and internet lines in Kachin State were suddenly cut off, and it has now been a year. Since then, Starlink internet cafes began operating, charging from 3,000 kyats per hour, and have continued until now.

However, just before the one-year mark, Starlink accounts began to be locked and disabled due to the service being unauthorized in Myanmar. As a result, Kachin residents who already faced internet blackouts are now increasingly worried.
