December 10 marks the 77th International Human Rights Day, and on this occasion, KHRW (Kachin Human Rights Watch) has issued a statement urging the International Criminal Court to designate the Myanmar military junta as a terrorist organization.

The theme for this 77th International Human Rights Day is “Our Voice, Our Fight, Our Right.” While countries around the world are able to freely observe this day, people in Myanmar and Kachin State continue to face daily human rights violations.

KHRW outlined four key calls for action regarding the designation of the junta as a terrorist organization. These include:

1. Ensuring that the coup regime takes responsibility for human rights violations committed against civilians;

2. Urging the International Criminal Court to designate the junta as a terrorist organization;

3. Taking immediate action against individuals and organizations that support the junta;

4. Ensuring the protection of civilians and putting an end to acts of violence, and calling on all parties involved in the conflict to respect human rights and international humanitarian law.

In its fourth year of rule, the junta has continued to commit numerous violations, including the arbitrary arrest and killing of civilians including children, carrying out airstrikes, bombing religious buildings, restricting freedom of movement, and imposing media blackouts.

The United Nations first proclaimed International Human Rights Day on December 10, 1948, and today marks its 77th anniversary.
