According to a report by Kachin Human Rights Watch (KHRW), 17 civilians were killed by the military junta and 3 others by an unidentified armed group in Kachin State throughout June.
Hpakant Township experienced the highest number of human rights violations. There, 17 civilians died due to junta actions and 3 more were killed by an unidentified armed group. Additionally, 6 civilians were injured by weapons-related incidents.
On June 3, two company staff members were killed when a heavy weapon fired by the junta exploded at the company’s storage facility.
On June 6, a deliberate heavy weapon attack by the junta killed 9 civilians, including 4 children, and destroyed numerous homes in Hpakant Township. Local sources confirmed the attack occurred in the evening, with the shell landing between Hkunsa Kone Monastery and Kyezu Taw Pagoda, causing extensive casualties and property damage.
After the junta’s military column entered Hpakant at the end of May, soldiers reportedly committed extrajudicial killings and used civilians as human shields along their route.
The United Nations, ASEAN, and the international community have also called for urgent action to halt the junta’s human rights abuses.
