Naval convoys of the Military Council that had stationed overnight in Shwegu Township, Kachin State, continued their journey upstream along the Irrawaddy River, and were ambushed near Ngabatwa village by joint forces of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), according to military sources.
On July 27, the convoys that departed from Shwegu toward Bhamo came under heavy attack and consequently had to retreat, said a military source.
Furthermore, the KIA joint forces also attacked accompanying ground troops that were providing security to the naval fleet along the riverbanks.
Reports indicate that the Military Council is using naval convoys along the Irrawaddy River to transport arms and supplies to its remaining strongholds in Strategic Military Base 21, as part of a major effort to reinforce positions and maintain control of Bhamo.
