Schools under the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) administration that had been temporarily closed due to airstrikes by the military council in KIA-controlled areas have reopened and resumed classes starting from October 13, according to local sources.
“Since the air attack in Sadung, KIO-administered schools in Garayang, Hkatsu, and Dabak were temporarily closed. They started reopening yesterday. We are still worried, but we reopened for the sake of the children’s education,” said a resident of Dabak village.
After displaced people returned to resettle in their original village, Dabak has been operating a KIO-administered school up to Grade 7, while Gara Yang village has been able to extend its education program up to Grade 10, sources said. Although there have been no ground offensives by the military council in territories controlled by resistance forces, the junta continues conducting aerial bombardments and frequently targets places such as schools and monasteries where many people gather, locals said.
In recent days, airstrikes have also been occurring almost daily in the Waimaw-Lamyang area.
