The Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) headquarters has issued an order for the indefinite closure of all KTV and DJ Bar establishments in its controlled territories, including Hpakant, under the command of KIA Brigade 9. This directive, released on June 26, 2025, cites rising concerns over increasing drug use and social problems among youth, married individuals, and workers frequenting these venues.
The order states that due to the proliferation of drug sales and consumption such as "Happy Water" and Ketamine at KTVs and DJ Bars, these businesses have become hubs for drug-related activities, leading to a deterioration in social morality and well-being. Therefore, all such venues must close with no set reopening date.
Similarly, on June 24, 2025, the KIO’s Eastern Regional Administration ordered the immediate closure of all KTVs in Mai Ja Yang. Additionally, on May 24, 2025, the Liza city administration instructed two KTVs and two Melody music shops in Laiza to close temporarily and indefinitely for the same reasons.
The KIO headquarters emphasized that anti-drug operations are being carried out in cooperation with local anti-narcotics committees, a campaign ongoing since 2014.
