The Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) administration have prohibited gold mining operations within areas restricted by local residents in Chihpwi Township, Kachin State, according to local sources.
“Because of gold mining, there have been many cases of landslides, road destruction, and lack of clean water. These areas were restricted to prevent such problems,” said a local resident.
The restriction was imposed to prevent potential dangers resulting from gold mining and to protect water routes and roads from damage, according to the reports.
Under military council rule, not only individual small scale miners but also large companies using heavy machinery were engaged in gold mining operations in Chihpwi Township, locals said.
In late 2024, the KIA took control of the entire Kachin Special Region (1), including Chihpwi Township, previously under the control of the Zahkung Ting Ying group, and it remains under KIA control to this day.
