The KIO/KIA will stand in accordance with the will of the public regarding the Ayeyarwady Myitsone Dam project, which the military is attempting to revive, said KIO/KIA spokesperson Colonel Naw Bu.
He made the remarks in response to renewed moves by the military to resume the controversial hydropower project.
The Ayeyarwady Myitsone hydropower project, which had been suspended for 14 years due to opposition from local communities, was raised again for review, discussion, and possible implementation during Deputy Commander-in-Chief Senior General Soe Win’s visit to Myitkyina on December 17, where he addressed local residents.
Regarding the project, the KIO government stated that the stance of the people is the most important consideration.
Although the Myitsone Dam project was suspended in 2009 due to protests and opposition from local residents, the military has now re established a leading committee for the Ayeyarwady Myitsone hydropower project in an effort to revive its implementation.
