The effort to restart the Myitsone dam project in Kachin State is putting pressure and threatening local communities for the benefit of a small group, according to the Kachin State Human Rights Defenders Network (KSHRDN).

KSHRDN stated that amid ongoing political instability and intensifying armed conflicts, the military commission’s move to restart the Myitsone Hydropower Project, which had been suspended for over a decade is an action that prioritizes the interests of a few over the public interest.

Although public opposition had temporarily suspended the project since 2011, the military council has reportedly held 13 public gatherings to push for the restart of the Myitsone dam project.

Furthermore, the Kachin State Human Rights Defenders Network (KSHRDN) expressed strong objections to the actions taken to resume the Myitsone Hydropower Project.
