In Hpakant area, Kachin State, electricity has been cut off for nearly three months, causing difficulties in the daily lives of local residents, and they said they strongly wish for electricity to be restored as soon as possible.

Because of the power outage, local residents have to pay to have their phones, power banks, and other electronic devices charged at places with generators, a local man said.

“It has been a long time without electricity. Fuel prices have also gone up, and using solar isn’t very convenient especially now in the rainy season,” a local man said.

Residents of Hpakant explained that at the same time they are already worried for their safety due to the current armed conflict, they are also facing hardships from not having electricity. They urged responsible authorities to take quick action to restore power.

In addition, because of the shortage of fuel oil in the Hpakant area, those who use private generators and shops are also facing many obstacles when trying to buy fuel, they said.

Up to now, frequent clashes between the two sides continue to occur in Hpakant and along the Hpakant roads, and trucks often get stuck on the road, according to fuel truck drivers.

Furthermore, along the Hpakant-Nam Ya road, military council troops have been stationed along the route, strictly inspecting travelers. At Kyaukhtu (north of Ma U Pin), Nam Ya, Nam Tin, and Le Pyin gate, people are being strictly checked for names, vehicle numbers, and ID cards, it is learned.
