Although there have been no clashes in recent days in Tang Hpare area, located about 28 miles from Myitkyina, locals report that they are facing many difficulties because the military checkpoint there has imposed strict age restrictions on travelers.

At the Tang Hpare checkpoint set up by the military council, travelers between the ages of 18 and 45 are being restricted from passing through.

Local people said that during this time of heightened military tensions, they rely on hunting, gold panning, hill farming, and cultivating fields for their livelihood.

With such age restrictions and tightened inspections at the checkpoint, locals who travel to the upper parts of Tang Hpare for work and survival are experiencing many hardships.

In Kachin State, daily clashes are continuing in Hpakant and Bhamaw areas due to military council offensives, but although the situation around Tang Hpare area has remained relatively calm in recent days, strict security checks and travel restrictions are still in place, they said.

It is also learned that there are about three military checkpoints set up by the military council in Tang Hpare area, where travelers are being subjected to body searches and phone inspections. This age based restriction on travelers has reportedly been in effect for more than a month.
