Clashes have continued in the Hpakant area without respite, and because there are security inspections and roadblocks along the routes to Hpakant, chicken and pork merchants trapped on the roads are facing significant hardships and losses, according to truck drivers.

“A lot of trucks headed for Hpakant have been stuck for days, so the chicken and pork merchants are starting to lose considerable amounts as chickens and pigs have died,” said one driver.

Due to these roadblocks and checkpoints set up by the military council, the movement of goods in and out of Hpakant is being strictly checked, resulting in persistently high commodity prices in the area.

Prices in Hpakant remain high, one viss of meat or fish costs over 100,000 kyats, one egg is 1,000 kyats, one viss of eggplants is 20,000 kyats, one viss of oil is 40,000 kyats, and prices of other commodities continue to rise.

As of now, because the roadblocks on the Hpakant routes remain in place, some vehicles heading to Hpakant have turned back toward Hopin, according to reports.

Additionally, access for vehicles at Hopin Ywa Thit Gyi has been blocked, so vehicles are traveling to Hopin using the 7-mile road along the Pyidaungsu highway.
