In Kachin State, particularly in the mountain areas near Myitkyina, Mohnyin, Namti, and Kamai towns, rainfall of up to around 8 inches may occur, with the likelihood of heavy downpours, according to forecasts released by meteorological experts on the evening of August 21.
In recent days, the water level of the Ayeyarwady River at Myitkyina has been reportedly rising and is currently about 585 centimeters (approximately 19 feet) short of reaching the official danger level of 1200 centimeters.
As extremely heavy rainfall and sudden river flooding could occur, people are being urged to remain alert and take necessary precautions. In the upper reaches of the Ayeyarwady River, rainfall intensity remains significant, and due to periods of heavy downpours at different locations in the upstream confluence areas, it is forecast that the water level at Myitkyina will continue to rise repeatedly.
Therefore, residents living in low-lying areas and riverine islands along the Ayeyarwady, such as farmers, fishermen, and all communities reliant on the river for their livelihoods are being advised to exercise caution, according to warnings issued by experts.
