The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has announced that people should be on alert for possible flooding in the coming days in upper Myanmar regions including Kachin State, Chin State, and northern Sagaing Region as more rain is expected.
As continuous heavy rainfall could occur, residents living near rivers are urged to take particular care and carry out precautionary evacuations. It was also stated that people should be especially mindful of possible landslides and road damage.
Due to the continuing rains, heavy rainfall on August 11 in the Laiza area caused flash flooding, swelling Laiza Stream, Hka Chyang Stream, and Hka Ya Stream. Floodwaters entered the town, inundating homes located beside the streams and damaging them. Goods belonging to street vendors selling along the roadside were also swept away by the water.
This latest flood in the Laiza area is the second occurrence in the current month. After flooding on August 4, cleanup and recovery operations were still underway. According to local residents, electricity supply in Laiza has still not been restored as of the present time.
