Methadone Substances Are sold and Used Illegally in Mohnyin

The locals said that the drug users are illegally trading methadone at a rate of 5,000 kyats per drop in Mohnyin Township, Kachin State.

“The drug users receiving methadone treatment are selling the methadone substances to the illegal users near Moedasu Kyar Phyu pond, Mohnyin. After selling a drop of methadone for 5,000 kyats, they buy heroin and use it again. People who use methadone illegally don’t want to go and take the drug at the hospital because they are afraid that people from their neighborhood will know,” said an acquaintance of someone who buys and takes methadone.

Methadone is bought and used by most drug addicts. In addition, during the Covid-19 period in Mohnyin, Mohnyin Methadone Center was provided methadone for one month or 15 days and at the present, illegal methadone drug trading between drug users and those who quit the drug has become a market, according to the residents of Mohnyin.

“They are selling methadone at 10 o’clock in the morning near Moedasu Kyar Phyu pond. The person who sells methadone and the person who buys it already have a connection. They already have information spreading between them about selling and buying the methadone. People who don’t want to take the methadone legally are buying and using the methadone like that,” said a ten house group elder in Mohnyin who did not want to be named.

Even though the news about methadone trade is spreading, the relevant authorities do not make any arrests or actions.

The methadone department of Mohnyin Hospital previously cooperated with the SARA organization, but after the coup d’etat, only Mohnyin Hospital continues to be responsible for the methadone department.
