Due to a bombing attack by the military using aircraft, many civilians have been killed and injured.
In Kachin State, on the opposite bank of the Ayeyarwady River from Bhamaw town, internally displaced civilians sheltering in Kawng Ja Village were attacked yesterday, 22 January, at around 4:00 PM while they were engaged in prayer. The military junta carried out the attack using jet aircraft, dropping no fewer than three bombs.
As a result of the attack, at least 21 innocent civilians lost their lives, and 28 people, including children, were injured. It is reported that around six of the injured are in critical condition.
At present, those who sustained injuries are in urgent need of emergency medical assistance. The area targeted is a location where internally displaced persons are residing. As such attacks constitute crimes against humanity, the Kachin Human Rights Watch (KHRW) has issued a statement strongly condemning the military junta’s actions.
Furthermore, in order to prevent further loss of life, KHRW has called on the international community to urgently ban the supply of aviation fuel. The organization also stated that this act serves as strong evidence for international justice mechanisms to designate the military junta as a terrorist organization, according to remarks by KHRW spokesperson Ko Jacob.
