U Tin Aung San, a military-appointed minister, stated that the Myitsone Dam project, set to restart in Kachin State, should not be opposed during a gathering held in Myitkyina on January 10 to mark Kachin State Day.
He explained that the Myitsone Dam hydropower project is the most cost effective, presenting details about the plan to restart the project at the confluence of the Irrawaddy River. He emphasized that locals should not oppose the project, and if it succeeds, Kachin State will experience development, with future generations benefiting from its advantages.
The military junta announced on August 27, 2025, the formation of a leading committee for the Myitsone hydropower project, which will be implemented in collaboration with SPIC Yunnan International Power Investment (SPICYN) from Yunnan Province, China.
Currently, in addition to the Myitsone project, the military’s election is also being opposed by citizens across Myanmar, including in Kachin State. The Myitsone Dam project was initially studied during the tenure of U Than Shwe in 2002 and worked on together with the Chinese company CPI. However, due to opposition from local communities and environmental protection groups, the project was halted on September 30, 2011, by the U Thein Sein government.
