As the military situation grows increasingly tense, locals from Myitkyina said that the junta has intensified checks and searches in crowded urban areas, even extending to intersections and inner city roads.

“In recent days, inspections have become more frequent. They don’t check absolutely everyone, but when they get some kind of information, they search thoroughly. Now they are even stopping motorbikes and checking them, so people are living in constant anxiety when moving around,” a Myitkyina resident said.

Similarly, at intersections in the Radarkone, soldiers have set up positions and are conducting inspections, focusing mainly on mobile phones. According to one young local, they are carefully going through social media platforms such as Messenger, WeChat, Telegram, and Viber.“

In the Radarkone area, they are active every day. Right now, phones are their main target. Those who do the searches can read Kachin language very well, so we have to be extra careful. It’s no longer easy,” he said.

In the early morning of September 22, there were also reports of heavy inspections at the Palana intersection.

In recent days, the military has not only been checking travelers but also ordinary pedestrians inside the city, while reinforcing their presence at the Bala Min Htein Bridge with increased manpower. On September 14, two civilians were shot dead on the San Pya Road, an incident that has left locals fearful for their security.
