Military and militia checkpoints at the entrance to Putao have reportedly begun collecting city entry fees starting from the second week of May.
Previously, checkpoint fees were only charged to cargo trucks and passenger vehicles. However, local residents say that authorities are now collecting taxes from all vehicles entering and leaving the town, including both large and small vehicles.
“Since the second week of May, both the joint checkpoint at Mula Shidi and the militia checkpoint near the airport at the town exit have started charging checkpoint fees. Three-wheelers, motorcycles, and all vehicles have to pay 1,000 kyats per crossing with a 24-hour receipt. Private cars are charged 3,000 kyats. They are collecting fees both when entering and leaving the town. We don’t even understand the reason behind it,” a local resident said.
Residents also said that the new checkpoint fees at the town’s entry and exit points have become an inconvenience for people who travel daily into town for work.
