In Myitkyina, the military council has increasingly set up checkpoints on main roads and intersections in both the city and outskirts, stopping and inspecting passersby. Local residents report that recently, aside from questioning and casual conversations, the military has also begun scrutinizing KPay accounts, especially chats and records of money transfers and withdrawals.

“Just recently, at Balamintin Bridge, someone was arrested. The military said they had been searching for that person since 2022. They claimed the arrest was due to money transfers made through KPay for PDFs. They kept looking until they finally caught him. Now we are always cautious,” said one local resident.

In the past, when inspecting people on the streets and at checkpoints, the junta used computers and advanced technology to identify individuals, which led to the arrest of many CDM staff members. At present, similar arrests are now happening in connection with KPay as well, locals said.

It is reported that since 2021, the military has continued making arrests of people who were placed on their blacklist, and with the use of more modern technology in recent times, the risk of being detected and caught has increased.
