Due to airstrikes and ground offensives carried out by the military council following the coup, a total of 88 women were killed and 54 others were injured nationwide during the month of March, according to a statement released by the Burmese Women’s Union (BWU).

The incident with the highest number of female casualties occurred on March 5 in Nyaunglebin Township, Bago Region. In this case, military council troops reportedly arrested and executed civilians in groups from the villages of Yae Twin Kone, Khayu Kone, and Kyaung Kone. Among those killed in the incident were 17 women.

Among the total number of female deaths, 57 were caused by airstrikes, 21 by extrajudicial killings, 4 by being burned alive, 3 by heavy artillery shelling, 1 due to sexual violence, 1 due to lack of access to medical treatment, and 1 due to landmines.

Similarly, among the injured women, 48 were wounded due to airstrikes, 4 due to landmines, 1 due to heavy artillery shelling, and 1 due to gunshot wounds.

Additionally, among those killed were 20 girls under the age of 18 and 3 pregnant women at the time of their deaths.

Although the military council is attempting to gain recognition as a legitimate government by organizing a sham election, convening a parliament, and selecting a president, it continues to carry out widespread acts of violence across the country. These include airstrikes, mass killings of civilians, torture, and other forms of repression, according to BWU.
