Military Council Orders Early Christmas Celebrations in Kachin State

It has been reported from government staff that the military council has issued an order requiring Christmas celebrations to be held early in areas where elections will take place in Kachin State.


According to reports, the military has instructed government departments in Kachin State to complete all Christmas celebrations before 23 December, ahead of the usual date of 25 December.


“A directive was issued telling us to finish all Christmas events by the 23rd, before the 25th,” a staff member said.

Five townships from Kachin State are included in Phase 1 of the elections organized by the military council, scheduled to be held on 28 December.


Parties contesting in Kachin State include the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), the People’s Pioneer Party (PPP), the Taiyintha Solidarity and Unity Party, as well as other ethnic parties and Shan ethnic parties.
