Military Council Shelling Kills Four More Civilians

In Hpakant area, without any clashes taking place, artillery shells fired by the Military Council hit Mana village around midnight on September 23, killing four civilians and seriously injuring one more, according to local residents.


“It was almost one o’clock at night, the shells were fired from Hpakant’s Byuha Hill. Four people from Mana died when the shell landed just after their religious ceremony ended. One person was severely injured. Since it was midnight, when people were asleep, there was no chance to escape,” said a resident of Mana village.


At 4 a.m. on the next day, September 24, another artillery shell fell and exploded on top of a house near a betel shop in front of the football field in Mana village. Military Council columns are stationed in Hpakant Byuha Hill, Lone Khin, as well as in Maw Wan Lay, Maw Wan Gyi, Maw Mau Layang, Ahmite Pon, Taung Pyo, Sharaw Hka, Maw Taung, San Chyoi, and Yuma villages.


At present, they have also been deployed at Lone Khin Pagoda, Laipyin School, Maw Si Zar Pagoda Hill, and near top of Mashi Kahtawng. On September 22, two people a father and son were killed in Kyauk Dwe Taung when the Military Council dropped bombs.Given the current situation, KIA spokesperson Colonel Naw Bu has warned the public to be extremely cautious about airstrikes, artillery shelling, and ground fighting risks posed by the military council.


The Kachin Human Rights Watch (KHRW) also issued a statement, saying that the Military Council is committing war crimes by targeting civilian residential areas with artillery fire and drone bombs.
