Fighting has resumed and military tensions are escalating after the military council launched a counteroffensive starting May 17 to retake the 5 junction outpost on the outskirts of Shwegu town, which it had previously lost control of, according to sources.
It is reported that clashes continue intermittently as the military keeps advancing with large scale troop deployments in an effort to recapture the 5 junction outpost, resulting in ongoing fighting that comes and goes without a clear pause.
The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) joint forces had previously seized control of the 5 junction outpost in the last week of April. During that battle, they reportedly captured a number of weapons and ammunition, including RPG anti tank rounds, 40mm grenades, landmines, and other military equipment.
It is also reported that after regaining control of the Myitkyina–Mandalay strategic highway, the military council has been transporting troops, weapons, and supplies along this route into Kachin State and continuing military offensives in the area.
