Military Opens Fire During Jade Trading

According to local sources, Myanmar military troops opened fire on civilians during gem trading activities in Maw Si Zar and Lone Khin gem markets in the Hpakant area of Kachin State around 7 p.m. on October 22.

“The military entered suddenly when there were many gem traders in the market. As soon as they arrived, they started shooting with guns. People screamed and ran in all directions,” said a local resident.

The sound of gunfire caused panic and fear among residents, who now worry about further possible actions by the military.

Although no clashes between the two sides have recently occurred in Hpakant, the junta’s forces have been continuously carrying out airstrikes in the area in recent days.
