Large quantities of medicines being transported to Myitkyina on New Year’s Day 2026 were seized by the military commission troops, according to a person close to the pharmaceutical trade.
“On New Year’s Day, medicines belonging to many major wholesale shops in Myitkyina were reportedly seized along the Monywa road by the military. As a result, medicines will run short,” said a person close to the pharmaceutical trading sector.
The medicines destined for Myitkyina were seized by the military commission troops along the Monywa road. The seized items reportedly included large quantities of medicines belonging to major distributors and shops in Myitkyina, such as Myat Mon, Sein Ohn Thi, two shops under Khe Mar Thiri, and other pharmaceutical distributors.
“Normally, medicines are transported by road. If the medicines are not properly listed in the inventory, they can seize them whenever they want. But this time, they seized everything, including medicines that were officially registered,” the source added.
Since the military commission imposed restrictions on the transportation of medicines, it has become increasingly difficult to transport pharmaceuticals, and prices have also risen.
At a time when some medicines are already in short supply in Myitkyina and prices are increasing, further seizures like this are expected to worsen shortages and drive prices even higher, according to the sources.
