In the Hpakant region, military tensions are rising between the Min Zay Thant Militia and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), with reports indicating that the Militia has been reinforcing its troops and increasing security around the Warazup-Jahtu Zup road area.
On the morning of July 29 at around 7 a.m., the Min Zay Thant launched two drone strikes near the Warazup monastery. As a result, two monks were killed and five others were injured, according to reports.
The People's Army had assumed that KIA forces were present inside the monastery, leading to the attack, which tragically caused civilian casualties.
Since February, the Min Zay Thant People Militia has been carrying out military movements around Wara Zup, and since March, has conducted drone and airstrike attacks, forcing local civilians to flee to mountainous and forested areas for safety.
Although many displaced civilians managed to return to their villages during June, the renewed escalation in clashes has once again put them in danger.
