Amid a rise in global gold prices, Myanmar’s domestic gold price has also climbed to over 10 million kyats per tical, according to local gold traders.

On January 21, Myanmar’s domestic gold market recorded a selling price of 10.2 million kyats and a buying price of 10.1 million kyats for one tical of 16 pae purity gold. Meanwhile, 15 pae purity gold reached a selling price of 9.6 million kyats and a buying price of 9.5 million kyats per tical, marking another all time high in history.

Although the market price has exceeded 10 million kyats per tical, the government reference price remains at only 6 million kyats for one tical of 16 pae purity gold, resulting in a price gap of more than 4 million kyats.

Global gold prices are also on the rise, currently reaching USD 4,834 per ounce. On Monday, the price stood at USD 4,666 per ounce, meaning it increased by USD 168.

Before the military coup in January 2021, Myanmar’s domestic gold price was only around 1.3 million kyats per tical for 16 pae purity gold. However, within five years after the coup, the price has surged more than seven times, approaching an eightfold increase, and continues to rise.
