Myanmar’s military junta announced on May 6, that it is extending its temporary nationwide ceasefire until May 31 to facilitate earthquake recovery and reconstruction efforts after the devastating March 28 quake. The junta stated the extension is intended to accelerate aid and rebuilding in affected regions.
However, despite the ceasefire declaration, there are multiple credible reports that military operations-including airstrikes and artillery attacks-have continued in various regions, especially in Kachin and northern Shan states. Local sources and international monitors confirm ongoing clashes and daily fighting between junta forces and ethnic armed groups, with civilians continuing to flee conflict zones.
The military maintains that it will respond to any attacks by opposition groups, and both sides accuse each other of violating the truce.
