The military council has announced that Myitkyina Airport, located in Myitkyina, was attacked with FPV suicide drones on the morning of February 12.
A local resident from Myitkyina said, “Normally we can hear aircraft noises until around 7 or 8 p.m., but yesterday evening we didn’t hear any planes taking off.”
According to the statement, joint forces of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and People’s Defense Forces carried out the attack using FPV suicide drones targeting Myitkyina Airport and nearby areas. The military council said the attack was detected by air defense systems and that the drones were intercepted in advance.
The statement did not disclose the number of drones involved, only mentioning two crash sites. It also said investigations are underway to identify those responsible for the attack.
Similarly, posts on Facebook pages reported that all flights scheduled for yesterday evening were suspended. Some local residents said announcements stated that updates would be provided only after rescheduled flights are confirmed.
Previously, on February 8, a KIA joint force reportedly destroyed a radar station at the Nant Paung Air Base using drones.
Meanwhile, in the fighting in Waingmaw, the military council is reportedly providing day-and-night artillery support from the Myitkyina-based M.P.Kh (regional military command headquarters).
