Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) sheltering in the sugar factory compound in Namti are facing severe hardship this rainy season, as prolonged and heavy rains have flooded their area, turning the compound into an almost lake-like environment.
These IDPs, who fled their homes due to ongoing armed conflict along the Hpakant road, have taken refuge in the Namti area. Unfortunately, the compound they currently reside in is located in a slightly lower terrain, causing rainwater to accumulate with nowhere to drain. As a result, residents are forced to live in waterlogged conditions, with no access to functioning toilets or bathing facilities, making basic daily life increasingly difficult.
In contrast, IDPs currently sheltering in Namti Kan La and Kum Tsai Yang villages have not yet reported similar flooding or submerging due to the rains. The situation at the sugar factory compound stands out as particularly dire.
The groups most affected at the sugar factory include displaced persons from the Lawa Roman Catholic Diocese and Wa Aung areas. At present, they are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, especially food, clean drinking water, medicine, sanitation, and shelter.
According to local sources, many IDPs across Kachin State, including Namti are experiencing worsening conditions due to incessant rains. Humanitarian needs are growing by the day, and affected communities are calling for immediate support to alleviate their suffering.
