According to local sources, for over a month now, there have been nearly daily reports of people being killed and left by the roadside in Hpakant, Kachin State, with the perpetrators remaining unidentified.
A local man from Hpakant stated, "Since the end of May, people have been killed one after another almost every day, and no one knows who is responsible for these deaths."
Victims are being found dead in various locations such as roadsides, inside drainage ditches, and even floating in water, with the number of such cases increasing day by day.
Most of the victims appear to have been shot, and there are also cases of people being secretly tortured and killed. However, it is said that there has been no success in identifying who is responsible or which armed group might be involved.
On the evening of July 2, it was reported that an unidentified man died from gunshot wounds in Mashi Kahtawng Ward. Similarly, on July 1, another man was shot dead near the cemetery in Lone Khin Village.
Locals report that since the end of May and the beginning of June, there have been almost daily shootings in Hpakant Township, with the number of victims increasing day by day.
According to Myanmar Now, a total of 11 people were shot dead without clear identification in Hpakant during the month of June. Similarly, Kachin Human Rights Watch (KHRW) reported that 17 people have died in Kachin State due to human rights violations and killings by the military council, with Hpakant Township being the area with the most human rights abuses.
