A self-reliant school is being constructed at the Hpung Ngai Yang IDPs camp near Sumprabum, Kachin State, to provide education for children. However, school supplies and teachers are still urgently needed, according to displaced persons at the camp.

"Starting today, we are building a school out of bamboo for the children’s education. While we can construct the school building ourselves, we still lack many essential supplies—from notebooks and pencils to other teaching materials. Most importantly, we need about four more teachers to handle middle school-level classes," said one of the camp’s teachers.

Construction of the middle school within the camp began today, with enrollment set to open on May 25. Classes are expected to start in early June.

"Last year, we had nearly 300 students—just three students short of that number. This year, we expect a similar turnout, though we can’t yet confirm the exact number of enrollees," the teacher added.

The displaced community emphasized that qualified teachers are their most pressing need, along with school supplies and other essential items. They are calling on civil society organizations to provide support.

The Hpung Ngai Yang camp houses over 1,000 displaced people from Sumpiyang, Insi Yang, and Wadat villages, many of whom fled their homes on May 11, 2024, due to conflict.
