In Kachin State’s Indaw Gyi area, it has been reported by locals that households are being ordered to send one person to attend military training, with SNA members going door to door to enforce it, and even disabled women are not exempt.

“Around Nantmun town, Shwe Letpan village, and Lepone Lay village, which are under the control of the Shan Nationalities Army (SNA), they are ordering one person from each household to attend a military training, and they come directly to houses to take people. In some households, it is not just one person, but the whole family that has to join. Even a young disabled woman was forced to join the training,” said a local woman, aged 40.

According to locals, SNA has told residents that after finishing the training, participants would be allowed to stay at their own homes without being sent to the frontline. They are also campaigning that citizens who had avoided military service should return home through appeals made via their parents.

On July 16, SNA troops seized Mamone and Mai Nawng villages, known for gold mining near Indaw Gyi, but a month later, clashes with the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) broke out again, resulting in heavy casualties among SNA troops. Locals believe this is why the group has stepped up forced recruitment, even targeting disabled women.

It is also reported that people between the ages of 18 and 59 are being seized from workplaces, streets, and even their homes to be forcibly recruited into military service. While the first and second rounds of training had only 200 to 300 recruits each, the current third round is said to have grown to over 800 trainees. To provide for the large number of recruits, women are also being forced to take turns cooking meals at Nammum Aung Myay Gate.

The SNA is reportedly conducting its military training in the compound of the Buddhist monastery in Nammun Aung Myay. The main entry point into the Indaw Gyi area, has been under blockade by both the SNA and the Military Commission for nearly three months.
