As of today, July 21, it has been exactly one year since phone and internet services provided by telecom operators such as MPT, Ooredoo, ATOM, and Mytel were cut off across Kachin State, according to local sources in Myitkyina.
Currently, while phone lines from Mytel, MPT, and ATOM are somewhat accessible again in Myitkyina and other townships, the connectivity is not reliable, and high-quality connections remain limited. Locals report that most people using social media now rely solely on Starlink Wi-Fi services, as stable internet is still unavailable through traditional networks.
“At the moment, we have MPT, ATOM, and Mytel lines back, but the quality is not good. Only certain areas in town have better connections, but there’s still no internet, people are just using Starlink Wi-Fi,” one Myitkyina resident stated.
The ongoing disruption of phone and internet services is causing significant difficulties in daily life and business operations for residents.
The cut-off began on July 21, 2024, when the military council ordered the indefinite suspension of phone and internet lines from major operators including MPT, ATOM, Ooredoo, and Mytel in most townships across Kachin State, including Myitkyina.
