According to an announcement issued today by the Office of the President, more than 1,500 prisoners from prisons across Myanmar have been granted amnesty.
The President’s Office stated that the amnesty was granted on the full moon day of Kason, Wednesday, with the intention of bringing peace of mind to the public, enabling the released individuals to participate again in nation-building efforts, and in consideration of humanitarian grounds.
In Myitkyina, a total of 34 prisoners were reportedly released, including 32 men and 2 women. Although prisoners were granted amnesty, only a small number of political prisoners were included.
According to the statement, the amnesty was granted under Section 401, Subsection (1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, with the condition that if the released individuals reoffend, they will be required to serve the remainder of their original sentences.
