Over 100,000 Civilian Homes Destroyed in Nearly Four Years

During the more than four years since the military coup, a total of 116,897 civilian homes have been destroyed by arson, according to Data for Myanmar. Of those, 113,054 homes were burned down by the military council and its subordinate groups.
Of all homes destroyed nationwide, Sagaing Region accounted for 65%, with 76,990 homes burned, while 1,979 homes were destroyed in Kachin State.
Throughout the four years following the coup, armed clashes between the military council and resistance forces intensified, leading to widespread destruction of civilian homes. The military council and its subordinate groups carried out operations involving the torching of towns and villages, the deliberate burning and demolition of homes, looting of valuable property, and burning houses after setting up temporary bases.
Due to these arson attacks, 2,111 homes were destroyed in 2021; 46,856 homes in 2022; 31,728 homes in 2023; 31,916 homes in 2024; and 4,286 homes from January to the end of May 2025.
