In the early days of June, continuous heavy rainfall for about a week in the Lungsha Yang village tract, Putao Township, caused streams, including the Malikha River and mountain creeks-to overflow, resulting in significant damage and loss of local farmland.

According to a local landowner, over 100 acres of farmland situated along the banks of the Munyap Creek in the Lungsha Yang village tract were washed away by the floods, leaving around 35 households without farmland.

He said, “The flooding of Munyap Creek last week was unlike previous years, it was much worse than before, and the water rose much earlier than usual. We hadn’t even started plowing yet, and the floods swept away entire fields and irrigation channels. Around 35 households from that area now have no land left to farm. Last year, we suffered because the price of cooking oil skyrocketed during planting season, but this year, we’ve lost all our farmland as well.”

The Lungsha Yang village tract has over 3,000 acres of farmland worked by local residents. With recurring annual floods and water surges like this, villagers are continually losing their farmland, facing increasing hardship.

Lungsha Yang village tract is home to over 5,000 people and more than 800 households, making it the second largest village tract in Putao Township.
