More than 2,000 displaced people from six villages including Seng Hpra, Kap Maw Zup, Nam Ya and Nant Ting in Hpakant Township, Kachin State, are in urgent need of shelter, medicine, and food, according to a statement released by the Uru Sengmaw Zonal (UGZ).
Among the displaced, 1,252 people are currently being housed in 14 churches across the Uru Sengmaw Zonal. However, there is an urgent need for basic necessities, including bedding, food, medical supplies, and other essential items.
Additionally, 1,231 locals fromKap Maw, Seng Hpra, and Nam Ya villages, as well as 203 displaced persons from Sut Awng Yang village, remain in hiding in nearby forests and mountainous areas. Efforts are underway to relocate them to safer shelters.
Currently, many of the displaced are being sheltered in school buildings. However, with schools set to reopen soon, there is a pressing need to relocate them, posing significant challenges.
The intensified clashes in Hpakant have forced residents from 10 villages along the Myitkyina-Hpakant road to flee their homes since April 24.
