Internally displaced persons (IDPs) taking shelter in Shwegu Township, Bhamaw District, are facing increasing difficulties in their livelihoods and accommodation as the displacement period becomes prolonged, according to the displaced people.
The IDPs currently in Shwegu Township are local residents who fled from areas such as Bhamaw, Mansi, and Momauk. They are staying in monasteries, within 13 religious compound areas, in relatives’ homes, as well as in rented houses and hostels in Shwegu town.
However, those staying in monastery compounds and religious areas have had to relocate for various reasons. Meanwhile, those renting houses are facing financial difficulties, making it increasingly hard for IDPs to secure stable shelter.
In addition to accommodation challenges, the prolonged displacement has led to financial hardship, as well as growing difficulties in accessing food, medicine, and essential supplies.
In Shwegu Township, a total of 1,747 households, amounting to 6,475 people, are currently taking refuge.
