Due to the flooding and overflow of the Shweli River, which flows downstream from China, more than ten villages and wards in Man Wein Gyi area, Mansi Township, Kachin State, have suffered damage and loss of croplands and farmlands, according to residents of Man Wein Gyi.
From early July until around the 12th, heavy rainfall in China and increased dam water discharge have caused the Shweli River to overflow, resulting in widespread destruction of crop fields.
"A majority of them are Shan villages. Crop fields, farmlands, sugarcane plantations, banana plantations, and vegetable beds have all been completely flooded and submerged in muddy water. A lot has already been lost. Some people had planted rice in their fields. Now everything is underwater. Nothing is left,” said a local man from Man Wein Gyi.
In addition, the floodwater has not receded and has remained for nearly a week. As a result, planted bean crops and rice paddies have rotted, leading to further losses. Since this is the season for rice planting, an inability to farm at this time could lead to hardship in food and rice supply in the future.
Besides the damage to croplands, many local houses have also been flooded. In Man Wein Gyi market, vegetable prices have risen significantly, up to 1,000 kyats per bundle.
The water level of the Shweli River started rising back on July 8 and, as of now, the riverside villages remain flooded, continuing to pose transportation difficulties, locals say.
