In Myitkyina, Kachin State, passport processing had previously faced delays, but currently, passports are being issued earlier than the scheduled appointment dates, according to staff at the Myitkyina Passport Office.
"Previously, when the passport office closed, applicants who had submitted their documents before the closure had to wait for a long time, causing inconvenience. To avoid such issues, we are now issuing passports in advance," said an employee from the Myitkyina Passport Office.
The office is now expediting the process to prevent delays for applicants who submitted their documents before the closure. As a result, even those who applied later are receiving their passports before their scheduled dates, the staff member added.
"Currently, we are prioritizing applicants who would otherwise have to wait for months, issuing their passports as early as possible. Even those who need their passports within days are getting them ahead of time. Regardless of whether applicants use brokers or not, we are issuing passports earlier than scheduled," the employee explained.
According to the staff, both renewal and new applicants are receiving their passports faster than before. However, those renewing their passports are advised to recheck their appointment dates for collection.
In Kachin State, all phone and internet connections were cut off on July 21, 2024, disrupting operations at the passport office. As a result, the Myitkyina branch had to suspend passport issuance and extensions.
Following this, residents of Kachin State had to travel to Yangon or Mandalay to apply for passports.
Although passport services resumed in Myitkyina on October 14, internet connectivity issues caused prolonged waiting times for appointments.
