Residents of the conflict-ridden Hpakant region report that they have been experiencing a power outage for over a week, making daily life increasingly difficult due to the prolonged lack of electricity.
The outage was caused by a tree falling on the power lines, and power has not yet been restored since July 9.
“It’s been more than a week without power. They said a tree fell on the power lines somewhere along the road. No one knows when electricity will be restored. Right now, there’s no electricity at all, not even at intervals,” said a local resident of Hpakant.
Currently, clearance and trimming of trees and bamboos are underway in order to repair the damaged power lines. Some areas are receiving electricity on a rotational basis, while others remain entirely without power throughout the day.
Additionally, the Electricity Supply Enterprise (ESE) Hpakant stated that starting on July 13, around 25 personnel have been working on clearing and trimming trees and bamboos from near the 8-Mile Junction in Mogaung Township to Nant Yar.
Meanwhile, the region continues to experience heavy fighting between the military junta and joint forces of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), including frequent artillery and armed attacks.
Similarly, in Namtu, due to flooding at the local power plant causing damage to all three generators, residents in Putao and Machanbaw townships have been without electricity for nearly three weeks.
