Due to heavy rainfall and subsequent mountain flooding, machinery failure occurred at the Chihpwi Hydropower Plant, resulting in a halt in electricity production. As a result, the entire Mohnyin District has experienced a power outage, according to local residents.

"The main electricity supply comes from Chipwe. Now that something happened to one of the machines at the Chihpwi Hydropower Plant and electricity production was stopped, the whole Mohnyin District has gone dark," a resident from Mohnyin town said.

Since early August, Kachin State has been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall, and mountain streams have overflowed, causing floods. Due to flooding from these mountain streams, machinery failure occurred inside the Chihpwi Hydropower Plant, and Mohnyin District has been without power since this morning, according to reports.

Relevant authorities stated that they are carrying out inspections and repair works on the electricity supply.

Therefore, the electricity office has warned that when power supply is restored, voltage instability may occur. They advised the public to avoid switching on important equipment immediately, and to wait about 30 minutes before restarting water pumping systems.

At present, heavy rainfall continues, and due to mountain flooding, low lying areas including Laiza town in Kachin State are still experiencing flooding.
